AAHOA: Decision in Choice Hotels Breach-of-Contract Case Further Highlights Need for Fair Franchising

Atlanta, GA, Aug. 9 – An arbitrator ruled that Choice Hotels International Inc. is liable to a Franchise hotel owner for three breach-of-contract claims by finding that Choice Hotels violated terms of its own franchise agreements, including promising volume discounts for products and services for the benefit of Franchisees that Choice Hotels never negotiated or delivered.

AAHOA Statement on June Jobs Report

ATLANTA, Ga., Jun. 5 – Employment in the hospitality industry is continuing its slow rebound from the pandemic, according to the latest federal jobs report. Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 339,000 in May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, with about 1,300 of those new jobs in hotels and motels. Overall, the leisure and hospitality segment added about 48,000 jobs, according to the jobs report. Despite the gains, the U.S. unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to 3.7 percent.

AAHOA Statement on California Senate Bill 403

ATLANTA, Ga., Jun. 2 – The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), the largest hotel owners association in the world, strongly opposes any form of discrimination, including caste. AAHOA, however, opposes California Senate Bill 403 (“SB 403”) due to a concern that it could lead to improper and unlawful racial profiling, targeting, and attacks on individuals of Asian American descent and/or who practice the tenets of Hinduism. Adding “caste” to the anti-discrimination categories outlined in Section 51 of the California Civil Code and other Education Code and Government Code sections is unnecessary, and will cause more harm than good.
