AAHOA Supports Introduction of the Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act of 2025

Washington, D.C. – September 26, 2025 – The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) today announced its support for the Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act of 2025, introduced by Representatives Mike Collins (GA-10), Brandon Gill (TX-26), Tom Tiffany (WI-07), and Harriet Hageman (WY-AL). This legislation aims to deter frivolous lawsuits and restore accountability to the legal system — a critical issue for small-business owners like hoteliers.

"For small-business owners, a single frivolous lawsuit can imperil their livelihoods and unravel years of hard work," said AAHOA Chairman Kamalesh (KP) Patel. "This legislation gives hoteliers a fighting chance by ensuring those who weaponize the courts face real consequences. It's about restoring fairness so our members can focus on what they do best: running their businesses and supporting their teams."

AAHOA's nearly 20,000 members own 60% of all hotels in the United States, representing 3.2 million guestrooms and supporting almost 1.1 million jobs nationwide.

"Frivolous lawsuits don't just waste time — they siphon resources away from job creation, community investment, and growth," said AAHOA President & CEO Laura Lee Blake. "This legislation provides a much-needed bulwark for small-business owners who cannot afford to fend off meritless claims. Protecting them means protecting the vitality of Main Street economies across the country."

The Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act would:

  • Make sanctions for frivolous lawsuits mandatory rather than discretionary.

  • Eliminate the 21-day "safe harbor" period that allows withdrawal of frivolous claims without consequence.

  • Require payment of attorney fees and other expenses for parties harmed by frivolous filings.

  • Allow additional sanctions, including striking pleadings, dismissing cases, or imposing financial penalties, to deter future violations.

AAHOA urges Congress to advance this legislation and safeguard small-business owners from abusive litigation practices.
